La Sud seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
La Sud is a West-North-West facing stretch of French coastline that comes alive when the North Atlantic pumping machine switches on. From October through March, average swells build to 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) with periods of 11-13 seconds, and the wind is clean from the east a healthy 30-39% of the time. This is the heart of the European winter swell window. Deep extratropical cyclones track across the Atlantic, sending long-period WNW and NW groundswell into the Bay of Biscay. When the NAO index is positive, the storm track aligns even better. These months deliver the most consistent, powerful surf of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and May see the Atlantic starting to slow down: average wave heights fall to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), periods shorten to 10-11 seconds, and the ideal offshore wind percentage drops to 20-25%. Still, spring can keep La Sud rideable, especially when late-season lows deliver clean NW swell. September is the return of the Atlantic after the summer lull, with periods lifting back above 10 seconds and a noticeable rise in quality as the ocean begins to wake up. These shoulder months are less consistent, but often offer warm-water surfing with lighter winds.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the doldrums at La Sud. Average swell height bottoms out at around 3ft (0.9m), wave period drops to 9 seconds, and ideal offshore wind occurs only 15-20% of the time. The swell remains predominantly NW, but the wave heights are mostly in the 0.5-1m range, making for groveling waves at best. Longer-period swells from distant southern hemisphere or weak Atlantic lows are rare and quickly swallowed by summer sea breezes. Expect small, lumpy conditions unless a early season hurricane remnant or strong low sends something special. This is the season to save your energy, or grab a longboard.
