Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and La Torche, with its full west-facing exposure, is perfectly positioned to catch the best of it. From October through March, average swell heights sit in the 6-7ft (1.8-2.2m) range with periods mostly between 10 and 12 seconds. The wave rose is dominated by the ideal W, WNW, WSW and NW windows, as extratropical cyclones tracking across the Atlantic send long-period groundswell straight into the beach. The main problem is wind: the same storm tracks that create the swell also favor onshore SW through NW flow. The magic arrives when a high-pressure system builds over central Europe and pulls the wind into the NE through SE quadrant, grooming those powerful W/NW lines into clean, hollow peaks. Those are the days that make La Torche world-class.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
April and May are a step down in size and energy, with average heights around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods easing to 9-10 seconds. The swell is still coming from the good directions, but it is more about rippable, fun-sized waves than raw power. September is the standout of this group: the Atlantic begins to recharge, periods push back toward 10 seconds, and ideal offshore winds reach 22 percent, the highest of the year. Warm water, smaller crowds and clean conditions make September one of the hidden gems at La Torche.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the annual summer lull. Average swell heights hover at 3ft (1m) and periods drop below 9 seconds, so most of what arrives is short-period W/WNW windswell. The prevailing NW and NNW sea breezes, combined with frequent onshore SW to W flow, keep quality inconsistent, and ideal offshore winds only occur 13 to 17 percent of the time. It is rarely flat at La Torche, but the waves are small and often soft, making it a great time for lighter summer rubber and dawn patrol on the higher tides.
