L'Embarcadore seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The extended autumn and winter months deliver the heaviest, longest-period swell to L'Embarcadore. As the North Atlantic storm track swings south, extratropical cyclones roll through the eastern Atlantic and send consistent W and WNW groundswell toward the French coast. Average wave heights climb to 1.6-2.1m (5-7ft) with intervals pushing 10-12s, and when the wind turns offshore out of the north or northwest, this south-facing beach can hold powerful, clean peaks. The downside is wind: the same storms that produce the swell often drag S/SW flow across the coast, and the ideal offshore wind percentage only runs 17-27% during this window. Still, the highest-quality days of the year almost always occur here.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
These transition months offer a compromise: smaller but cleaner surf. Swell heights ease to 1.2-1.4m (4-5ft) and periods settle into the 9-10s range, while offshore wind frequencies improve to 33-37%. Spring brings a strengthening Azores High and more NE/NW airflow, while September marks the first taste of autumn swell as water temperatures remain warm. Expect rippable, fun-shape days rather than heavy barrels, with plenty of head-high waves scattered through the month.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
High summer sets in across the eastern Atlantic as the Azores High builds and a thermal low develops over the continent. Swell averages bottom out around 1.0-1.1m (3-4ft) and periods hover in the 8.5-9s range, limiting power. The W/NW windswell that feeds the spot is usually clean, and ideal wind percentages hit their annual peak of 42-47%, but the lack of size keeps this as a small-wave period suited to grovelers, longboards and summer fun.
