Les Cavaliers seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

When the North Atlantic storm track awakens in October, the gears shift at Les Cavaliers. The beach's west-northwest exposure lines up perfectly with the dominant W/NW groundswell generated by sequential extratropical cyclones, and average wave heights climb from 1.3m (4-5ft) in October to 1.8m (6ft) by midwinter. Average periods sit in the 11-13s range, giving the swell real power and push. At the same time, a building continental high pressure over Europe feeds more frequent offshore winds from the east/southeast; by December almost half of the time (48%) winds are favorable. Water temps are cool (12-18°C) but manageable in a winter suit, and the combination of size, period, and clean offshore texture produces the most consistent and high-quality surf of the year. A positive NAO phase in particular can lock in the storm track and deliver days of immaculate WNW-NW lines.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)

The shoulder months are a transition game. April and September still see a healthy dose of NW and WNW swell, but average heights drop to 1.1-1.2m (3-4ft) and periods dip to 10-11s. The Atlantic low-pressure train is less organized, so you are often left with smaller, less powerful swell that needs a sandbar and light winds to make the most of it. Ideal wind windows shrink to 23-29% of the time, and onshore W/NW breezes become more regular as thermal low pressures develop over the peninsula. Still, when a late-season or early-season storm aligns with a reluctant summer high, Les Cavaliers can produce fun, rippable walls with warm-ish water (13-20°C) and fewer crowds.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Les Cavaliers is defined by a stubborn North Atlantic subtropical high. The average swell drops to 0.9m (3ft) and periods fall to 9.0-9.4s, leaving mostly short-period NW windswell rather than true groundswell. The wind regime is also hostile: offshore flow occurs just 16-20% of the time, while persistent NW-NNW sea breezes and synoptic onshore winds ruffle the surface. Water temps peak at 21-22.5°C, which is nice for swimming, but surf quality suffers. Only the occasional tropical storm or summer low far offshore can inject a bit of energy. For serious surfers, summer is the time to bank points for the winter; for beginners and longboarders, the small clean days can still be fun.
