Best Surf Season (December - February)
Ammoudia is a west-southwest-facing beach on the Greek Ionian coast, and its best waves arrive when Mediterranean winter storms do. Between December and February, the average swell height climbs to 2.3-2.6ft (0.7-0.8m) and average wave periods push close to 6s. The wind pattern is the real key: NE, ENE, E and ESE offshore flow dominates, and ideal surfing winds blow 36-38% of the time. Swell from SW, WSW, W and WNW lines up directly with the beach, producing clean 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) waves with occasional bigger sets when a deeper low tracks through the Ionian Sea. When the North Atlantic Oscillation trends negative, cold high pressure over the Balkans can combine with these lows to deliver crisp offshore days and the best winter surf.
Fair Surf Season (March - April and October - November)
These shoulder months offer the most variable but still rideable conditions. March holds on to decent WNW/WSW swell energy, though average wave heights slide to 2ft (0.6m) and ideal winds drop to 28%. April weakens further but can still see clean days if a late low passes north of Greece. On the autumn side, October sees the first meaningful return of groundswell and ideal winds jump to 21%, while November is one of the best months overall with 2.3ft (0.7m) average swell, 5.6s periods, and 33% ideal wind. During these windows, you need to be selective and ready to move when a low-pressure system aligns with offshore flow.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
The Mediterranean summer slams Ammoudia into a long flat spell. Average swell heights hover around 1.3ft (0.4m), periods bottom out at 4.1-4.6s, and ideal winds fall to just 4-11%. The dominant swell directions are still WNW and WSW, but they are essentially short-period windswell with no size or power. Onshore W and WNW sea breezes build each afternoon and chop up the surface. May and September are slightly less flat than June through August, and a rogue storm can produce small, clean waves, but this is the season to leave the shortboard at home. Water temperatures do climb to a luxurious 19-25°C, so if you do get skunked, the swimming is world-class.
