Outside Grupuk is a captivating reef break gracing Lombok’s southern coast, where the ocean puts on a show that’s equal parts promise and unpredictability. This right-hander peels over a live coral bottom, offering a smooth, racetrack-like ride when conditions align—but its fickle personality means you’ll need to read the room (and the charts) to unlock a truly memorable session. The vibe here is electric, especially when the swell lights up, drawing a lively crowd of regulars and travelers alike, all chasing that same willing right wall. The wave comes alive on any significant south swell, favoring a southwest or southeast push, and handles 3-foot (0.9-meter) waves with ease. But don’t let the modest stat line fool you—when the swell ticks up, it reveals a more serious character that rewards intermediate surfers with a no-nonsense, hollow-ish bowl. Beginners will find forgiving rides on smaller days, making it a great stepping stone. Tides play a key role: mid to high tide is your window for the best shape, while a dropping tide can expose shallow coral. Watch out for southern hemisphere winds—an onshore breeze from that quarter will chop the lineup within minutes, so chase those clean, groomed faces by paddling out when northwestern winds prevail. Crowds can stack up fast, especially when word spreads that Outside Grupuk is pumping. To snag some breathing room, study the tide and wind patterns diligently—a little local knowledge goes a long way. When the stars align, you’ll be treated to a rippable, playful right that keeps you guessing and grinning until the last wave. Show up ready, keep your eyes on the horizon, and this Lombok staple just might deliver one of your best sessions.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The southern shores of Lombok come alive during the heart of the Indonesian wet season. From December through March, the monsoon trough shifts northward, allowing offshore winds from the north and northwest to prevail over 30-58% of the time. This window sees a steady supply of groundswell from the south and southwest, with average wave heights holding in the fun, rippable 1-1.5m range and periods consistently above 12 seconds. The combination of clean conditions and well-defined swell makes this the prime time for Grupuk.

Fair Surf Season (November & April)

The transitional months of November and April offer a mixed bag. Swell energy remains high, with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, but the wind patterns become less reliable. In November, offshore flow from the north and west appears only about 10% of the time, while onshore southerly and easterly winds dominate. April sees a sharp drop to 25% favorable winds as the southeast trade winds begin to strengthen. Still, when a light offshore breeze aligns with a SSW groundswell, you can score some of the smoothest waves of the year.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

The dry season transforms Grupuk into a wind-dominated challenge. From May through October, the southeast trades blow relentlessly, clocking in at 15-30 kph from the ESE and SE. Ideal offshore winds from the north are virtually absent (often less than 2% occurrence). While the swell actually peaks during these months – average heights climb to 1.6-1.8m with powerful, long-period energy (14+ seconds) – the almost constant onshore wind chops up the surface, making conditions predominantly messy and difficult. Only the most sheltered corners or fleeting windows of lighter wind offer rideable waves.
