Auroville seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - January)
The northeast monsoon is Auroville's engine room. As winter high pressure builds over the Indian subcontinent, the trade-like NE flow funnels across the Bay of Bengal, kicking up consistent ENE and E windswell that hits the east-southeast-facing beach with real push. Average surf heights climb to 3.3-3.9ft (1.0-1.2m), and while the period averages only 6.6-7.1s, that is enough for punchy, rideable beach break waves. The catch: NE and ENE flow is not what Auroville wants to see. The 27-35% ideal wind windows are when you need to be in the water. When those windows align, Auroville will have its most consistent, rippable waves of the year.
Fair Surf Season (February - April & September - October)
The months bridging the monsoon seasons are transition periods. February to April sees the NE swell train slowly drop to 2.3-2.6ft (0.7-0.8m) while the dominant direction rotates from E/ESE to SE and SSE; wind quality also deteriorates with the increase of sea breezes and southerly flow. September and October mark the reverse transition, with S/SSE monsoon swell gradually replaced by SE/E swell as rain increases and tropical cyclones around the Bay of Bengal become a wildcard. Surf tends to be smaller and less organized, but occasional 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) days are possible.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
The southwest monsoon locks in from May through August. This is Auroville's cleanest wind window, with ideal offshore flow from WSW/W/WNW/NW occurring 33-66% of the time in the warm half of the year. But the swell comes from the wrong direction: S and SSE swells dominate, and almost no ENE/E/ESE/SE swell shows up in the data. Auroville's east-southeast exposure does not pick up these southern swells well, and most days hover around 3ft (0.9m) with soft, groveling conditions. Far from an epic surf season, it is best for beginners and longboarders when the south swell wraps in.
