Best Surf Season (April - October)
The heart of Balangan's swell window comes with the dry season in the Southern Hemisphere. From April through October, the Indian Ocean storm track pushes persistent SSW/SW groundswell toward the Indonesian archipelago, and average wave heights climb from 5.6ft (1.7m) in April to a solid 7.2ft (2.2m) by July and August. Periods sit in the powerful 13.8-14.4s range, which is critical for Balangan: even though the dominant swell comes from a somewhat oblique SSW/SW angle, the long period allows the energy to refract and reorganize as it approaches the Bukit Peninsula. The easterly trades also strengthen, keeping the percentage of ideal wind high -- September and October score 77 and 86 percent respectively -- and the surface glassy for the long left-handers. May through September is the meat of the season, with June-August offering the most size and April and October providing the cleanest, most user-friendly structure.
Fair Surf Season (March & November)
March and November are transition months between the wet and dry monsoons. The swell is still consistent -- 1.6-1.7m (5.2-5.6ft) with 13.2-13.3s periods -- but the wind is less reliable as the regional pressure patterns shift. March sees only 46 percent ideal wind as west/northwest flow still competes with the developing southeast trades, while November is much cleaner with 73 percent ideal wind and very consistent SSW/SW energy. These months can deliver excellent sessions, but they require a closer eye on wind direction and tend to be less powerful than the core winter months.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The wet-season monsoon takes over from December through February, and conditions at Balangan become much more challenging. Average periods drop to 12.4-12.7s, average swell height eases to 1.6-1.7m (5.2-5.6ft), and the wind distribution is dominated by W to WNW flow -- exactly the angles that ruin the quality for Balangan and put a distinct chop on the surface. Ideal wind plummets to 18-29 percent, and heavy tropical rainfall (7.6-9.5 mm/day) adds fresh runoff and unstable surface conditions. The real bright spots are few, but the occasional clean, cloudy morning with light E/SE wind and a fading SSW swell can still produce a worthwhile session.
