Belongas Bay seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
The northwest monsoon is the key that unlocks Belongas Bay. From December through March, offshore winds out of the N, NNE, NE and NNW quadrant are most frequent, giving the south-facing reef the clean, groomed surface it needs. At the same time, strong Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean storm systems push consistent SSW/SW groundswell across the basin. Average wave heights sit in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range, periods run a powerful 12-13s, and ideal wind frequency peaks at 29-59%. This is the most reliable window for Belongas at its best: heavy, long-period reef barrels with offshore texture.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
April and November are transition months between the monsoon regimes. The Southern Ocean is still active, and long-period swells keep arriving from the S/SSW/SW window, but the wind field becomes less consistent. April sees ideal conditions about 30% of the time as southeast trades begin to build; November sees only 10% as the trades finally break down. There are still quality sessions, especially in the light-wind windows, but consistency drops and surface conditions are more of a lottery.
Low Surf Season (May - October)
From May through October the southeast trade winds lock in across southern Indonesia. Ideal offshore wind drops to between 1% and 12%, while ESE/SE/SSE flow blows from the ocean side at 10-30kph for most of the season. Ironically, these months often bring the biggest swells of the year - average heights of 5.5-6.5ft (1.7-2.0m) with 14s periods - but the wind-ruined surface means Belongas is rarely clean. May and June are the least harsh months, but don't be surprised to find mighty, bumpy, shut-down waves. Wait for the monsoon flip in November.
