G-Land seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - October)
The heart of G-Land's dry season lines up with the southeast monsoon, and it is no coincidence that this west-southwest-facing reef in southeast Java transforms into a world-class barrel factory. From April through October, the trades settle in from the ESE/SE quadrant, the monsoon trough shifts north, and the Southern Ocean storm track keeps a continuous stream of SSW/SW groundswell pulsing toward the Grajagan coastline. Ideal offshore wind is present 55-70% of the time, while average wave heights peak at 2.0-2.2m (6-8ft) with periods of 14.1-14.4s between June and August. That combination delivers the long, fast, hollow lefts G-Land is famous for.
Fair Surf Season (March and November)
March and November are the transitional months between Indonesia's two monsoons. The trades are either building or fading, so offshore wind windows become less reliable, though still very surfable. The Southern Ocean is still active enough to send long-period SSW/SW swell, but average heights ease to around 1.6m (5ft) and periods sit near 13.2s. These months can produce excellent sessions if you time a passing pressure pattern or a localized trade surge just right, but consistency is not locked in like the dry season.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
The northwest monsoon takes over from December through February, bringing the wettest weather of the year and pushing water temperatures back up near 29°C. This is G-Land's most frustrating stretch: while favorable SSW/SW swells still arrive, the wind rose becomes dominated by W, WSW, and WNW, which chop up the reef and rob the waves of their grooming. Average periods drop to 12.3-12.6s and ideal offshore wind is only 17-23%, so there is size there, but quality is the trade-off.
