Inside Lefts seasonal overview
Inside Lefts lives and dies by the Indonesian monsoon cycle. The south-west-facing reef is exposed to the deep-water Indian Ocean, so when Southern Ocean lows line up along the storm track, long-period S/SSW and SW groundswell rolls straight into the bay. The seasonal swing between the northwest monsoon and the southeast trades determines how clean that swell actually is. Through the wet season, W/NW winds and heavy rain bully the surface; through the dry season, the SE trades groom the lineup and the swell window tightens into the S/SSW pocket.
Best Surf Season (April - June)
April marks the handshake between monsoons. The trades begin to establish, ideal wind windows climb from the mid-20s to 36 percent, and the average period pushes toward 14s. May and June are the crown jewels: average swells of 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m), periods around 14.2-14.4s, and ideal wind time of 50 and 44 percent respectively. This is the most reliable window for clean, rippable Inside Lefts with real Southern Ocean power.
Fair Surf Season (January - March and July - August)
The northwest monsoon months of January through March still see plenty of SSW/SW groundswell, but W/NW winds and high rainfall keep the quality inconsistent; ideal wind time hovers in the low-to-mid 20s. July and August are the opposite: the swell is huge, with averages of 6.5-7ft (2-2.1m) and 14.4s periods, but the SE trades are now so strong that clean windows shrink to 33 and 18 percent. Size is there, but patience and dawn patrols are required.
Low Surf Season (September - December)
September and October combine oversized S/SSW swells with the worst wind percentages of the year, 10 percent ideal. November and December see the northwest monsoon return, dropping average heights back to 5ft (1.5m) and shifting winds into the W/NW/SW quadrant. From September through December, the percentage of clean, properly wind-groomed days is low, and the swell, while sometimes still powerful, is rarely allowed to show its best face.
