Inside Rights seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
The Indonesian monsoon is the key player here. During these months the northwesterly monsoon flow regularly reaches the island, creating the offshore N, NNE, NE, NW and NNW winds that Inside Rights needs to stay clean. Average wave heights hold in the 5ft (1.5m) range, but the swell trains are long-period and powerful at 12-13 seconds, with a strong SSW-SW component that lines up well on the south-facing reef. February is the standout month, with ideal winds 42% of the time and a healthy mix of 3-6ft (1-2m) SSW-SW swell.
Fair Surf Season (April - June)
As the sun tracks south, the Southern Ocean storm track strengthens and average swell heights climb to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), with periods building to 14+ seconds. The window for excellence is more conditional: the SE trades are beginning to establish, but they are not yet relentless, and in many years April can still produce immaculate 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) SSW groundswell under lighter offshore or variable winds. This is the premium tradeoff season - size is up, but ideal wind percentages drop from 29% in April to 23% in June.
Low Surf Season (July - November)
The SE monsoon is in full control and the surf at Inside Rights becomes a battle between enormous swell and constant onshore wind. July through October sees the biggest, most powerful groundswell of the year, with average wave heights peaking at 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) and periods near 14.5 seconds, but SE to SSE winds blow 80-90% of the time, ruining the face. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 3-13%. November begins the monsoon transition, although SE winds still dominate. This is a season for chasing rare, pulsing windows in between trade wind squalls rather than dependable daily surf.
