Kuta seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (March - May)
The transition out of the northwest monsoon lines up Kuta's south-southwest-facing beach with the best combination of solid groundswell and cleaner winds. Swell heights average 5-6ft (1.5-1.7m) with periods around 13-14s, generated by extratropical lows in the Southern Ocean. The wind data shows the ideal offshore quadrant from N/NE is most common from March through May, especially April, when ideal winds peak at 56% of the time. This is when Kuta offers rippable, long-period walls before the southeast trades get too strong.
Fair Surf Season (June - July and November - February)
During June and July, the Indian Ocean swell energy increases, but the southeast monsoon builds and adds a cross-to-onshore component. Surf quality becomes more session-dependent, with clean windows early in the morning. The November-February wet season is the opposite: swell sizes drop to around 5ft (1.5m) and periods shorten slightly, but the lighter winds of the monsoon transition can still produce fun, clean waves at Kuta, especially when N/NE offshore flow lines up.
Low Surf Season (August - October)
This is the heart of the dry season on Bali's southern coast, and although average swell heights remain big at 6-7ft (1.9-2m) with 14s+ periods, the southeast trades blow hardest from ESE/SE/SSE. These directions are bad for Kuta's SSW exposure and create widespread wind chop and lumpy, cross-onshore surf. Ideal wind percentages bottom out at only 17-20%, making it the most frustrating stretch of the year despite the size and power in the water.
