Macaronis seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - September)
The southern Indian Ocean enters full winter mode during these months, and Macaronis lines up perfectly with the storm track. Low-pressure systems spinning through the 'Roaring Forties' send consistent long-period SSW/SW groundswell toward the Mentawai chain, with average swell heights around 5-6ft (1.5-1.7m) and periods climbing from 13.9s to 14.3s. At the same time, the Mascarene High strengthens and pumps a persistent trade-wind flow over the region; ideal surfing wind jumps to 52-60 percent. July and August sit at the peak, when the combination of 14.3s energy and groomed conditions makes Macaronis one of the most reliable heavy left-hand reefs on the planet.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
The shoulder months of April and October still receive solid SSW/SW groundswell, with average periods of 13.5s and swell heights around 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m). However, the wind consistency is much more variable: ideal wind drops to 40-50 percent as the monsoon either retreats or begins to return. You can score firing, offshore-glass days when the wind aligns, but you may also sit through multiple sessions of rain and bumpy cross-shore breeze.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
The northwest monsoon dominates the wet season, bringing higher rainfall (7-10.3mm/day), lower average periods (12.2-12.9s) and a return of westerly/northwesterly winds. Ideal offshore wind falls to just 30-41 percent, and average swell height drops to 1.3m (4.3ft). The ocean remains alive, but the quality window narrows considerably; Macaronis needs the long-period southerly groundswell and clean east-northeast wind to show its world-class form. These months are best for travelers with flexible schedules who can jump on the occasional clean swell.
