Best Surf Season (April - June)
The Indian Ocean basin lines up beautifully for Ombak Tujuh from April through June. Average surf heights climb from 5-6ft (1.7m) to 7ft (2.1m), while wave periods push past 13.7 seconds, signaling strong, organized groundswell from the Southern Ocean. More importantly, the wind regime offers its most favorable balance of the year, with ideal wind percentages reaching 52-56% in April and May and staying above 46% in June. The monsoon trough has shifted north, the trade-wind flow is still building, and plenty of clean windows keep the southwest-facing break firing.
Fair Surf Season (October - March)
The northwest monsoon defines this stretch and brings a mixed bag to Ombak Tujuh. Swell direction remains favorable from the SSW and SW, with occasional long-period pulses delivering 5-6ft (1.6-1.8m) perfection. However, prevailing WNW, NW and NNW winds are largely cross-shore to the exposed break, often adding texture and lump to what would otherwise be clean faces. Ideal wind percentages sit in the 24-40% range, and tropical rainfall increases dramatically from December through February. It is still very surfable, but you have to time the offshore E/NE wind windows carefully.
Low Surf Season (July - September)
Do not let the giant swell numbers fool you. July through September serves up the biggest, longest-period swells of the year, often over 7ft (2.1m) and 14 seconds, but it coincides with the peak of the southeast trades. ESE and SE winds blow hard and consistently, with ideal wind percentages bottoming out at just 14-30%. The surf is frequently cross-shore and blown-out, so this is a 'low' season defined by quality rather than quantity. When the trade wind does ease, the rewards are massive, but those windows are rare.
