Scar Reef seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - October)
The south-east monsoon is the great redeemer at Scar Reef. From May through October the percentage of ideal offshore wind sits at 87-89 percent, rainfall collapses to near zero, and the average swell height builds to 5-6ft (1.5-1.7m) with 14.2-14.4 second periods. This is powerful, long-period energy, but the direction remains stubbornly SSW-SW - a poor match for this north-west-facing reef. The offshore SSE-SE flow is what saves the spot: it grooms the cross-swell, keeps the faces smooth, and lets the long-period groundswell wrap into the reef. This is the closest Scar Reef gets to firing all year.
Fair Surf Season (April and November)
April and November are transitional months between the north-west and south-east monsoons. Wind consistency improves to 69-81 percent ideal, the swell is still long-period and mostly SSW/SW, and average heights sit around 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m). These months can be very surfable, especially in the clean early-morning windows, but they lack the raw power and consistency of the core May-October season.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The north-west monsoon brings the worst of the year. Frequent N, NW, WSW and W winds cross or blow directly onshore at Scar Reef, and the ideal wind percentage drops to just 27-48 percent. Swell size slips to 4ft (1.2-1.3m), periods shorten slightly to 12.6-13.4 seconds, and heavy tropical rainfall adds plenty of surface mess. Occasional SSE/S offshore windows still produce fun, shaped-up 4ft (1.2-1.3m) waves, but they are the exception in a season dominated by lumpy, rain-whipped conditions.
