Serangan seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - February)
The northern winter is when Serangan really fires. The West Monsoon delivers a near-constant stream of westerly and northwesterly winds that blow offshore across the southeast-facing reefs, while the Indian Ocean storm track pushes potent SSW/SW groundswells toward Bali. Data shows average surf heights in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range with periods between 12-13s, and ideal wind frequencies at 62-64 percent - the highest of the year. This is the classic window for clean, powerful, long-period surf without having to grovel on a foamie.
Fair Surf Season (March & November)
As the monsoon transitions, consistency drops a notch but the surf remains very rideable. March still receives over 94 percent of its swell from the SSW/SW/WSW window and 48 percent ideal offshore flow, while November sees the southeast trades begin to retreat as west and west-southwesterly winds rebuild to 31 percent. Surf heights relax to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with 13s periods, and when the morning glass or a local sea breeze window lines up, Serangan can still offer excellent waves without the peak-season crowds.
Low Surf Season (April - October)
Southeast trade winds take control from April through October, blowing from the ESE-SE quadrant onshore for much of the day. The swell is often bigger - by June through August averages climb to 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) with 14s periods - but the wind frequently turns these into bumpy, difficult-to-read walls. The bookend months of April and October are the least bad, offering a handful of morning offshore windows and occasional lighter days. If you chase size and don't mind wind, the mid-year months deliver power, but for pristine Serangan conditions the wind, not the swell, is the bottleneck.
