T-Land seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April and September - November)
T-Land is a west-northwest-facing reef where the Indonesian monsoon cycle and Southern Ocean storm track do battle for control of the surf. The best windows arrive when offshore E to SE winds are established but not howling, and when the long-period SW groundswell still has enough push to wrap into the reef. In April and again from September through November, ideal wind percentages sit between 52 and 64 percent, and the swell direction is dominated by the SSW/SW quarter. This is not the absolute straight-in WSW/W window, but the 12-14s periods allow the energy to refract well, and the clean offshore flow keeps the faces lined up. Expect mostly 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf with periodic larger pulses.
Fair Surf Season (March, May and August)
March marks the transition out of the wet season, with ideal wind climbing to 33 percent but onshore W/WNW days still common. May has more size and plenty of SW/SSW swell but the E/ESE trades crank hard, limiting clean conditions to 28 percent of the time. August is the pick of the fair months: the long-period SSW/SW groundswell is solid, the trades are gradually easing, and ideal windows jump to 31 percent. These months offer good-to-occasionally-excellent T-Land when the wind is right.
Low Surf Season (December - February and June - July)
Two very different patterns produce the low-quality seasons. From December through February, the northwest monsoon sends direct WSW/W groundswell to the WNW-facing beach, but onshore W/WNW/NW winds blow for the vast majority of the time and ideal conditions sit at 10-25 percent. June and July are the opposite: the SE trades are at their strongest, wind directions like E/ESE are offshore, but the speeds are so high (20-40kph) that the surface becomes lumpy and difficult; ideal windows drop to 17-18 percent. Both chapters require a sharp eye on the forecast and a willingness to chase the rare clean day, but the reward is power and genuine Indonesian reef potential.
