Crab Island seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Crab Island's west-facing orientation puts it directly in the firing line of the North Atlantic, and from October through March the whole region shifts into high gear. As the Icelandic Low deepens and the jet stream accelerates, extratropical storm after storm rolls toward Ireland, sending long-period groundswell from the WSW, W, and WNW into the beach. Average swell heights climb to 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods of 11-13 seconds, and the occasional XL event can light up the island. The catch? The same westerly storm track that delivers the swell also delivers onshore wind. Only about 14-17% of the time does the wind align offshore from the ENE-to-SE quadrant, so you have to pick your windows. When it comes together, Crab Island is big, powerful, and world-class; when it doesn't, it's a churning ocean.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months see the Atlantic settle down but not completely switch off. April is the standout of the spring, with average 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) groundswell and the highest percentage of ideal wind of the year at 21%. May becomes more summer-like: still plenty of W/NW swell direction, but shorter periods and smaller heights. September is the first whisper of autumn, with the average period creeping back over 10 seconds and early-season groundswells showing up. These months offer the best balance of surfable waves, lighter winds, and more comfortable air and water temperatures.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer at Crab Island is not without waves, but they are generally small. The Atlantic's storm tracks migrate north, leaving behind a persistent westerly windswell with periods in the 8-9 second range and average heights around 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m). The swell direction remains surprisingly good, with W and WNW swells dominating, but the wind is more often onshore than any other time of year. This is the season for longboards and fun-sized waves, when a dawn patrol on a clean ESE offshore morning is worth more than the small afternoon westerly sea breeze. If you want size and power, you wait for the autumn equinox.
