Access requires careful navigation through nearby farmland and a golf course—trespassing is not an option, as electric fences and vigilant farmers keep the area protected. The waves here are best with a solid west swell, lighting up from around 2 feet (0.6 m) and handling larger pulses with ease. The beach throws up shifting peaks that offer both lefts and rights, with the south end consistently holding a reliable right-hand bank. Paddle-outs can be a grunt, especially when the surf pushes overhead—expect closeouts and rippy currents that demand respect. For the cleanest lines, time your session for low to mid tide and look for southeast winds to groom the surface. Keep in mind that Doughmore is under the watchful eye of the ISA and WCSC, as the golf club is actively involved in coastal defense work. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Doughmore's premium period revolves around the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March, the average swell rises to 6-8ft (1.8-2.5m) and the average period runs between 11 and 13 seconds, giving the west-facing beach consistent, powerful groundswell from the SW, WSW, W and WNW. This is largely driven by a positive North Atlantic Oscillation, which steers strong extratropical cyclones toward Ireland. The trade-off is wind: the prevailing westerly-to-southwesterly flow is often onshore, so the best days come when high pressure slips in from the east and sets up clean offshore NE-ESE conditions. When that combination aligns, the quality is exceptional.
