Best Surf Season (October - March)
Dunmoran Strand is a winter-wave magnet. As the North Atlantic storm track powers up in October and peaks in midwinter, average swell heights climb to between 7-9ft (2.0-2.7m) with periods of 11-13s. Deep low-pressure systems tracking across the Atlantic feed consistent, long-period groundswell through the western approaches, and the beach's north-northeast exposure catches the direct NNW/NW pulses while W/WNW energy wraps into the bay. The downside is wind: only around a quarter of days bring truly offshore flow from SSE/S/SSW/SW, so you have to time the post-frontal windows. When the NAO is positive, the storm track stays focused on Ireland and quality big-wave days multiply; when it goes negative, high pressure can block the North Atlantic and produce flatter spells. For the committed surfer, this is the real season.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
April and May see the ocean slowly stand down. Average heights ease from 5-6ft (1.7m) in April to 4-5ft (1.4m) in May, while periods drop from 10.7s to 9.6s. September is the mirror image, with the Atlantic beginning to refire and averages back up to 5-6ft (1.7m) and 10.2s. These shoulder months offer a better balance between usable size and clean conditions, plus warmer water and lighter air temps. The swell direction distribution also shifts favourably toward NNW/NW in spring, which is a much more direct angle for the beach. Not every day will be epic, but the chances of scoring a clean, rippable few hours are much higher than in summer.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August are the slow season. Average swell heights sit around 4ft (1.2-1.3m) and periods fall to 8.6-8.9s, meaning fewer long-period Atlantic groundswells and more local, short-period windswell. The dominant swell directions remain W and WNW, with a healthy dose of NW/NNW, so the spot doesn't go completely flat. Offshore winds become more frequent, especially in August when ideal conditions hold 34% of the time. For large, powerful surf you'll be disappointed, but for small, clean, fun waves on the right board, summer mornings can deliver.
