Best Surf Season (October - March)
The heart of the Irish winter transforms Enniscrone into a serious Atlantic surf break. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track is fully open, and average swell heights push into the 6-9ft (1.8-2.7m) range with periods hovering between 11 and 12.5 seconds. That puts the primary energy in the powerful, long-period band. The directional window is incredibly consistent, with the west to north-northwest quadrants supplying the lion's share of the groundswell. The catch? Many of these same directions are onshore, which is why the 21-25% of time with offshore south to west-southwest flow feels like gold. When a low-pressure system stalls or tracks just west of Ireland and the pressure gradient flips south of the region, Enniscrone turns into a hollow, lined-up beachbreak that holds size and demands respect.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
During April and September, the Atlantic is in transition. Swell heights step down to around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), but the directional quality remains excellent, with the dominant west-northwest windows still producing clean, rideable surf. Periods around 10.2-10.7s keep the waves organised, and the percentage of ideal winds pushes up to 26% - the highest of the year. This is a great time for intermediate surfers. You'll find smaller but still rippable waves with less winter crowds and a slightly warmer water column (9.7-15.1°C depending on which side of the transition).
Low Surf Season (May - August)
The summer months bring the smallest, least powerful surf of the year at Enniscrone. Average swell heights drop to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods fall into the 8.6-9.6s range, meaning the beach is often dominated by short-period swell and wind chop. Although the direction remains stubbornly west to north-northwest, the lack of Atlantic low-pressure intensity means the lines are short, weak and prone to mush. Days with 3-4ft social surf are common, especially with a southerly breeze grooming the faces, but heavy, pumping waves are rare. Summer is best saved for longboarders, beginners, or those who simply enjoy a cold Atlantic session in the long daylight hours.
