Magheroarty seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Magheroarty is a cold, exposed North Atlantic outpost on the Donegal coast, and its surf year is dictated by the ebb and flow of the winter storm track. From October through March, the average swell height climbs and holds between 2.6m and 3.6m (8.5-12ft), with periods regularly pushing 11-13 seconds. The western quadrants - W, WNW, NW and NNW - dominate the wave rose, sending heavy, organised lines straight into the beach. This is the pay-off season: wet, wild and potentially XL, when low pressure systems rolling off Greenland and a positive NAO pattern aim wave trains at Ireland. The trade-off is that ideal S/SSW/SW/WSW winds only blow 8-11% of the time, so you have to pick the windows behind cold fronts or under transient highs. When it cleans up, Magheroarty is a serious, charging arena.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and May are the spring shoulder months: the Atlantic is still releasing big groundswells, but average heights ease to 1.8-2.2m (6-7ft) and periods drop slightly, making the surf more manageable. Ideal wind percentages improve to 14-16%, and the lighter winds of spring mean less chop and more rippable faces. September is the mirror image on the autumn side, with the first strong low-pressure pulses of the season lifting average wave heights back to 2.2m (7ft) and periods back above 10 seconds while the ocean still holds some summer warmth. These months often deliver the best combination of size and clean conditions at Magheroarty.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the low tide of the surf year. The Azores High tends to nose into the North Atlantic, pushing the main storm track to the north and leaving Magheroarty with average swell heights of just 1.5-1.7m (5-5.5ft) and periods of 8.7-9.1s. There is still plenty of W/NW swell, but it arrives fat, short-period and inconsistent. Onshore N/NW winds are more common, and although the water is at its warmest - 15-16°C - and the air can reach the low 20s, the surf quality is generally small and crumbly. Summer is for the longboard and the fun-sized wave, not the winter charging session.
