Best Surf Season (October - November)
The Pacific typhoon season collides with the first strong cold fronts roaring out of Asia, and Katahama finds its rhythm. Tropical and extratropical systems together fire up a consistent train of E, ESE, and SE swell that marches straight into the ESE-facing beach, while the developing Siberian high begins to pump increasingly frequent offshore winds from the W and WNW. The result is the most reliable combination of optimal swell direction and clean, groomed surf. Average wave heights hover in the fun 4ft (1.2m) range, with periods stretching into the mid-8-second zone, giving rippable, punchy peaks on the best days.
Fair Surf Season (December - April)
Winter's monsoon grips the coast, sending strong offshore winds screaming from the W, WNW, and NW for the majority of the time. The catch? The dominant swell shifts to the W and WNW as well, which isn't the direction this beach wants. Even so, intermittent E and ESE pulses sneak through, especially during February and March, and when they line up with those offshore winds, Katahama turns glassy and fun. The southern end of this window, in March and April, sees improving swell direction but at the cost of increasing onshore E and ENE winds as the ocean warms. It's a game of picking the windows between fronts.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer is low season at Katahama, not because the swell disappears, but because the wind regime turns against the spot. The dominant pattern shifts to SW, WSW, and E/ENE onshore flows that rake across the ESE-facing beach. Although wave periods improve to 8-9 seconds and pulses of SE/SSE swell roll in from distant typhoons, the persistent onshore winds chop the surface into messy, bumpy conditions. September is the cruelest tease, as the optimal E/ESE swell coverage reaches its annual peak, but the accompanying ENE onshore wind often trumps the quality. Still, for the stubborn surfer, the occasional typhoon swell combined with a brief offshore pulse delivers the most powerful surf of the year.
