Omaezaki seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (September - November)
Autumn is when Omaezaki hits its stride. The Pacific typhoon corridor is still warm, and passing tropical systems pump long-period groundswell into the region, with average periods climbing to 8-9s. The wind statistics also turn: ideal wind conditions peak at 26% in October and 25% in November as the first continental high-pressure cells push offshore northerly flow through the Enshu Nada. While the dominant swell rose still carries a high percentage of E/ESE windswell, the S/SSW/SW window becomes more consistent, and when a strong typhoon hugs the southern coast, the SSW-facing beach lights up with clean, powerful surf.
Fair Surf Season (December - May)
Winter and early spring trade a more crowded but less refined surf menu. The Siberian high and Aleutian low pressure systems drive strong W/WNW wind and short-period swell in the 6-8s range. This keeps the banks active but rarely provides the long, clean lines the spot is known for. From March to May, the S/SW swell window steadily gains ground, though the average wave height slowly fades and spring rain and frontal systems muddy the surface. Expect plenty of fun, punchy 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) days, with occasional gems when an offshore N/NNE breeze meets a declining W/SW swell.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the most challenging period for quality at Omaezaki. The Pacific High parks to the southeast and drives persistent E/ENE and SW/WSW breezes, while dominant SW/S/SSE windswells arrive with short, bumpy intervals. Ideal wind percentages drop to 16-21%, and the warm ocean between 21-27°C invites plenty of warm-weather water time, but the lack of groomed faces means inconsistent surf. Typhoons are the wildcard: a perfect storm track can still drag late-summer S/SSW groundswell up the coast, but the prevailing onshore flow makes clean conditions the exception rather than the rule.
