Best Surf Season (August - October)

The heart of the Pacific typhoon season is when Ozaki truly comes alive. Average wave heights push into the 1.0-1.1m (3-4ft) range, while average periods stretch to 9.0-9.5 seconds, giving the east-southeast-facing beach a much more powerful and organised wave. This is also the time when the offshore wind percentages remain workable, especially in August when ideal conditions clock in at around 27%. Warm water in the 25-28°C range, persistent ESE/SE deep ocean swell, and regular windows of WSW/SW offshore flow make for the most consistent run of rippable, solid surf. When a typhoon tracks through the Philippine Sea and pushes long-period ENE-SE energy toward Japan, Ozaki can fire into the head-high-plus range and above.

Fair Surf Season (March - July)

From March through July, Ozaki settles into a transitional groove. Average heights hover between 0.8m and 1.0m (2-3ft), but periods drop to 7.4-8.2 seconds, meaning most surf is punchy, short-period and often reliant on windswell rather than true groundswell. The positive is that the offshore wind window widens dramatically during this stretch, climbing from 11% ideal conditions in March to 25-30% in June and July. The June 'Baiu' rainy season and early summer heat pump a lot of S and SSW swell at the coast, which is more oblique to the ESE exposure, but when a clean SW/W sea breeze links up with a decent SE swell, Ozaki turns fun and user-friendly.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The late autumn and winter months are the leanest at Ozaki. The Siberian High strengthens and funnels frequent WNW-NW offshore winds down the coast, but those winds are often too strong for clean conditions. Average wave height drops to 0.6-0.7m (2ft), and the percentage of truly ideal surf conditions shrinks to only 6-12% of the time. While average periods remain respectable at 8.5-9.2s, the lack of size means most days are small and grovelly. The real exceptions occur when a North Pacific low pressure system sends a burst of E/ESE swell toward the coast during a brief lull in the northwest monsoon; those narrow windows can deliver clean, lined-up winter waves with glassy offshore winds.
