The North Atlantic cranks up the machinery from October through March, and Langeoog feels the pulse. Average swell heights hover between 1.4m and 1.7m with periods in the 6.5-6.8s range, delivering punchy, rideable waves. The dominant swell directions from the NW quadrant (N, WNW, NW, NNW) align perfectly with the spot’s exposure, but here’s the catch: those same directions often bring onshore winds. The real magic happens when a blocking high over Scandinavia or a low-pressure system tracks south, drawing in offshore winds from the S to SE quadrant. These spells are relatively rare (ideal wind only 12-15% of the time), but when they align, you get clean, lined-up sandbar peaks. October and November offer the highest chance of offshore flow combined with solid swell, making them the prime months.

Fair Surf Season (April & May, September)

Spring and early autumn offer a transition zone. Swell heights drop to around 1.0-1.3m, and periods shorten to 5.8-6.2s, so the waves become smaller and more grovelly. The wind regimes become more unpredictable – lighter breezes and a mix of onshore and offshore directions. April can still see some decent NW groundswell from late-season storms, but it’s often wind-affected. September sees a slight uptick in activity as the Atlantic wakes up, and ideal wind percentages climb back to 14%. These months can serve up fun, rippable waves if you pick your windows with a keen eye on the charts.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles over the North Sea and the surf goes into hibernation. Average swell heights barely reach 1.0m, and periods sag to 5.6-5.8s – think long-period windswell at best. The prevailing westerly winds keep the surface choppy and messy, while offshore flow is scarce (10-13% ideal conditions). The dominant swell is from the NNW to NW, but these directions are also the primary wind directions, so you’re often battling onshore texture. It’s a time for longboard cruising or a wetsuit tan, not for expecting pumping barrels. If you do score a rare summer southerly breeze, you might find clean, tiny waves – but don’t hold your breath.
