Honky's seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (August - September)
The southwest monsoon is in full stride during August and September, and Honky's finally lines up with the southern Indian Ocean swell engine. This southeast-facing break receives a healthy dose of S, SSW, SW and WSW groundswell, with average heights around 3-4ft (1-1.2m) and average periods stretching to 8.4-8.9s. The trade-off is wind, but the waxing and waning of the monsoon brings enough WNW to NW offshore windows - ideal wind 45-47 percent of the time - to serve up clean, punchy reef waves. This is the most consistent surf window of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - July, October - November)
April and November deliver the cleanest wind windows of the transition months, with ideal wind percentages of 61 and 50 respectively, but the swell direction is less consistent and wave heights shrink to 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m). May through July are the opposite: the favorable S/SSW/SW/WSW swells become dominant and average sizes rise to 3-4ft (1-1.2m), yet strong W/SW monsoon winds and frequent tropical showers keep the surface lumpy. Patience and an early-morning approach are the keys to finding good sessions during these fair months.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The northeast monsoon locks the region into a dry, trade-wind pattern from December through March. Swell is dominated by ENE and E directions - often 50 to 70 percent of all wave energy - while the favorable southern-sector swells nearly disappear. The result is short-period, wind-affected, and poorly aligned surf at Honky's. There are occasional pocket-sized days when a NW/NNW offshore wind aligns with a fading S/SW pulse, but overall the reef is small, sectiony and frustrating until the monsoon flip begins in April.
