Riptides seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - September)
Riptides faces southeast, so it lives and dies by the Indian Ocean monsoon machine. Once the Southwest Monsoon locks in, the flow turns west and west-northwest, giving this reef the offshore wind it needs, while the southern Indian Ocean kicks up consistent SSE and S swell. Surf heights average between 3.5ft and 4.5ft (1.1-1.4m), periods climb from 8.2 to 9.3s, and ideal winds blow 38 to 54 percent of the time. July and August are the pick months: SSE swell is most direct, periods push 9.3s, and W/WNW winds groom the reef for long, rippable walls.
Fair Surf Season (April, October, November)
These shoulder-season months still offer plenty of surfable days. April has the highest ideal-wind percentage of the year at 64 percent and clean SE/SSE swell, but it lacks size, averaging only 2-3ft (0.5-1m). October and November keep wave heights near 3.5ft (1.1m), but periods drop to 8.0-8.3s and directions become mixed as the monsoon breaks down. Good windows exist, especially when westerly winds line up with a SSE swell, but consistency is lower than in the core summer.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The Northeast Monsoon is the main enemy here. From December through February, E and ENE winds blow onshore for the majority of days, while the period sits at a short 7.1-7.5s. There is often 3-5ft (1-1.5m) of east-northeast swell, but it is choppy and lumpy as it hits the southeast-facing reef. March is the transition month: size drops to 2-3ft (0.5-1m), but ideal wind percentages start rising to 45 percent. The few clean windows are precious, typically linked to temporary NW wind events or a weaker monsoon pulse.
