Best Surf Season (June - August)
The surf year at Sultans is dictated by the Indian Ocean monsoon wheel. June through August represents the core of the southwest monsoon, when strong low-pressure systems across the southern Indian Ocean and the Roaring Forties send S/SW swell energy north towards the Maldives. At the same time, the local wind regime swings into the W-WNW quadrant, which is perfect offshore flow for Sultans' southeast-facing reef. Average heights are the most reliable of the year at 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), with periods building from 8.2s to 8.9s and ideal wind scores peaking at 53 per cent in August. It is during these months that the reef produces its punchiest, most organized waves.
Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)
The shoulder seasons are a study in compromise. April is the cleanest month on paper, with 64 per cent ideal offshore winds, but the ocean is still resetting and the average wave height is only 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m). May, September, October and November maintain the southwest monsoon personality, but with shorter periods and more variable swell directions, mixing S/SW swell with returning SE/E trade energy. These months can deliver fun, rippable waves, especially on the morning offshores, but the consistency of a true destination trip is not quite there.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
December through February is the northeast monsoon, a time when the Maldives trade winds blow strong from the NE-ENE quadrant. For a southeast-facing spot like Sultans, this creates a frustrating combination: there is plenty of short-period ENE/E windswell in the 3ft (0.9m) range, but the accompanying cross-shore breeze tears up the surface, and the average wave period drops to only 6.7-6.9s. Ideal wind percentages bottom out between 17 and 30 per cent. The occasional west-northwest lull still turns the reef on, but overall this is the least consistent stretch for quality surf.
