Acapulquito, famously known as Old Man’s, offers a timeless, mellow surf experience in the heart of Costa Azul. Tucked directly in front of the Cabo Surf Hotel, this spot combines convenience with a classic longboard vibe—perfect for cruisers and beginners alike. Though the shoreline is a picture-perfect sandy beach, the waves actually peel over an uneven reef bottom, lending subtle variety and texture to the ride depending on the day. This break answers best to Southeast and Southwest swells, with a sweet spot around 3 feet (0.9 meters). The waves are predominantly right-handers, rolling in soft and forgiving, especially through the shoulder, which makes them ideal for new surfers building confidence. Northwest wind is your friend here, grooming the face clean, and the break handles low, mid, or high tide—so you can paddle out at just about any hour. That said, Old Man’s can be less consistent than its neighbors; it takes a healthy pulse of swell to wake up and deliver. Overall, Acapulquito serves up a relaxed, accessible environment where progression meets ease. Just keep in mind that while it’s a prime spot for a smooth ride, consistency can be hit or miss, and nearby breaks may offer more frequent action when the swell is on the smaller side.

Best Surf Season (April - September)

From April through September, Acapulquito hits its stride. Average swell heights climb from 1.0m (3.3ft) to a consistent 1.2m (4ft), while periods hold in the powerful 12.6-14.1s long-period range. The south and south-southwest pulses that dominate this stretch are not the exact ideal east-southeast swell, but they refract into the east-facing pocket and produce clean, rippable peaks once the west and northwest offshore wind regime does its magic. April and May are the jewels of the season, with ideal offshore winds 89-90% of the time and some of the longest, cleanest waves of the year. As summer progresses, southern hemisphere groundswell and eastern Pacific tropical activity take over, injecting bigger, heavier energy and occasionally pushing the spot into 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) pumping territory.
