January locks in the heart of Anton Lizardo's surf season. Average swell height reaches 1.1m and the period stretches to 6.8s, giving the swell enough juice to form clean, rideable lines along the north-facing coastline. The wave distribution is heavily weighted toward the optimal N, NNE, NE and NNW quadrants, which together account for roughly two-thirds of all swell energy. NNE and NE sources supply most of the chest-high background surf, while the NNW pulses tend to push larger 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) waves when a strong winter cold front rolls through the Gulf. However, the same synoptic setting brings a dominant NNW breeze - 30.9% of observations - often blowing 20-40kph, so the window can be short and onshore. The best moments come when the pressure gradient slackens or shifts to the south, with ideal south-to-southwest offshore winds blowing 21% of the time. With air temperatures around 20.9°C and water at 24.1°C, you'll be surfing in semi-tropical comfort - just pick the lighter-wind mornings.
