Petacalco seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - September)

Petacalco's most consistent and powerful surf arrives in the late spring and summer months as the Southern Hemisphere storm machine kicks into gear. Long-period SSW and SW groundswell pulses dominate the waverose, while average heights climb to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft). The beach's southeast-facing orientation wraps this south energy up the coast beautifully, and despite the rainy-season showers and occasional afternoon onshore breezes, dawn patrols often find clean, lining waves in the fun-to-solid range.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & October - November)

The shoulder seasons are transitional. Swell heights hover around 1.1-1.3m (3.6-4.3ft) with 13-14s periods, but wind and weather become more variable. March and April still see dry air and good morning offshore potential before the summer rains set in, while October and November feature a late-season blend of Southern Hemisphere swell with cleaner, drier breezes.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The weakest period for wave size at Petacalco, when average swell heights dip to 0.9-1.0m (3-3.3ft). The good news is that the dry season and a higher percentage of offshore/ideal wind offer plenty of clean, manageable conditions. This is a great time for logging miles on a groveler, but the lack of size and power keeps it from matching the rest of the year.
