Playa El Mojon seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Playa El Mojon is at its most dependable during the dry-season months of November through March. The Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter deliver a steady stream of groundswell from the S/SSW/SSE window, while the offshore wind machine - blowing from N, NW, WNW and NNW - runs at its strongest. November stands out with 62% ideal wind, and December through March all hover around 52-59%. Water temps stay warm at 79-82°F (26-28°C), air temps are comfortable, and rainfall is minimal. Expect consistent, clean 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) surf with long-period push in the 11-13s range.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and October)
As the seasons transition, the swell window tightens to SSW/S and the period actually lengthens, often into the 13-14s range. April and May still have over 50% ideal wind, but rain begins to creep in and the winds become a little more variable. October is the hidden gem of the fair season - it combines late-season SSW/S groundswell with a jump back to 57% ideal offshore wind and a falling hydrograph. Sizes in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range are common, though the rain can soften the session.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
Summer and early fall are the wet season on this stretch of the Mexican coast. Plenty of southern-hemisphere groundswell rolls in - average heights climb to 5-5.6ft (1.5-1.7m) with 13-14s periods - but the quality window shrinks. Ideal offshore wind drops to 43-50%, daily precipitation becomes frequent, and the ocean churns with more onshore, storm-influenced tendencies. This is the season for the dedicated crew who know how to read the charts and pick off the windows between tropical storms and afternoon sea breezes.
