Sayulita

Nestled on Mexico’s western coast, Punta Sayulita embodies the easy-going surf life, offering waves that invite surfers of all stripes to come play. The beach faces just north of west, but it’s the namesake headland—Punta Sayulita—that works as a natural magnet for groundswell rolling in from the west and northwest. This setup dishes up a fun, mellow wave garden where longboarders reign supreme and shortboarders find their groove when the swell has some kick. Swells here range from waist-high shoulder sliders (about 0.9m) to solid overhead sets (2.4m). The lefts breaking off the north end of the beach are clean and sectiony, offering long, drawn-out lines that carve beautifully under an east breeze. When a proper north-west or west pulse hits, even shortboarders can find enough push to put on a show. But the real draw is the righthander in the middle of town—a reliable mix of sand and rock that produces a steady, high-performance longboard wave when conditions align. Spring, summer, and autumn are prime time, though you can paddle out year-round. The spot handles waves from 3 to 8 feet and works well on any tide, especially with offshore east winds cleaning things up. Access is a breeze, with ample parking nearby, and while the main peaks draw a crowd, the local stoke stays relaxed. Keep an eye out for exposed rocks on the inside and the occasional sea urchin underfoot. Punta Sayulita is that perfect blend of approachable and engaging—a place where beginners find their footing and seasoned surfers find a smile.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

For a north-northwest-facing bay, Sayulita is a study in contrasts. The October through March window produces the most energetic, well-ordered swell of the year, with average wave heights holding around 1m (3.3ft) and periods frequently in the 13-14s range. That is prime North Pacific groundswell territory: Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific lows aim long-period WNW and NW swell directly at the Nayarit coast. The problem is wind. The same pressure gradient that drives those swell trains also funnels N and NNW wind through the region, so the ocean is frequently lumpy and cross-onshore. When the wind briefly flips into the S, SSW, SW or WSW quadrant, Sayulita transforms into a clean, lined-up point-break style wave, and those are the days to be in the water.
