Best Surf Season (October - March)
The Atlantic storm-track shifts south in autumn and winter, delivering the most consistent swell windows to the southwest-facing Boilers. The average swell height hovers around 6-7ft (1.8-2.2m) from October to March, with average periods of 11.6-13.3s. That is the powerful, long-period groundswell window. The offshore breeze from the north-to-east quadrant is also at its most reliable, with ideal wind frequency between 35% and 46%. While the swell rose is dominated by NNW and NW energy, the occasional W/SW component that really lines up on the southwest bank becomes possible as North Atlantic lows track closer to North Africa.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September bridge the two regimes. April still receives 6-7ft (2.0m) surf on 10.9s average periods, but stronger trade winds and a developing Azores High drop the ideal wind share to 25%. September sees the reverse: the swell averages a smaller 5ft (1.5m), yet the period climbs back to 10.1s and ideal wind jumps to 35%. Both months can serve up clean, mid-period surf at Boilers, but consistency is less than the core winter months.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From May through August the sub-tropical high settles over the eastern Atlantic and the North Atlantic storm track retreats. Average swell heights ease to 5ft (1.6m) and periods plummet to 7.8-9.4s, turning the ocean into a short-period, wind-driven sea. The persistent NNW trade wind blows at 20-40+ km/h much of the time, and the ideal offshore wind window shrinks to 18-23%. Out of these months, late August and early May offer the best chances of a fun session, but overall this is the low season at Boilers.
