Devil's Rock seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
The North Atlantic storm track is in full swing during the winter months, and Devil's Rock is right in the firing line. Average wave heights hold near 7-8ft (2.2m), periods stay in the powerful 12-13s range, and ideal wind scores sit at 45-57%, with December and January the most consistent. This is when the combination of long-period NW/NNW groundswell and occasional W-WNW pulses can produce heavy, well-formed waves on this WSW-facing stretch, especially when a clean easterly or northeasterly land breeze smooths the faces. In positive NAO winters, the jet stream funnels one Atlantic low after another toward the coast, keeping the swell machine stoked.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, October - November)
These shoulder months are all about timing. April still delivers 6-7ft (2m) average swells and 11s period, but only 32% ideal wind, so quality is often compromised by the strengthening NNW wind. May sees size and period slip further. On the autumn side, October marks the first real return of long-period energy as Atlantic lows rebuild, and November offers a 54% ideal wind score with solid 6-7ft (2m) swell. The windows are there, but you have to pick the days with easterly offshore flow and not just chase the raw numbers.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
The Azores High expands and the North Atlantic storm track retreats north, leaving Devil's Rock under a persistent stream of small, short-period NNW windswell. Average heights drop to 5-6ft (1.6m) and periods fall into the 8-10s range, while the prevailing NNW/NW breeze makes clean conditions scarcer. Water temperatures reach their annual peak in the 17.8-18.4°C range, and rain is almost absent, but the surf is generally weak and inconsistent. Summer is best saved for longboard groveling and morning sessions before the wind picks up.
