January: Deep-Winter Power at the Bay

January is the heart of the Moroccan winter and one of the most consistent months on the calendar at Imsouane. The average swell sits at 2.3m (7.5ft) with a powerful 13.2s period - about as good as it gets for the region. The swell rose is dominated by NNW and NW pulses, with 29.6% and 26.5% respectively, plus another 8.1% from the WNW. That means the open Atlantic is absolutely loaded with energy; for the SSW-facing bay, much of this arrives as wrapping, long-period swell, filling the bank and producing heavy, lined-up surf. Don't expect the direct S/SSW swell window to be frequent - those directions make up barely a few percent - but when a low-pressure system dips far south and sends true S/SW swell, Imsouane turns on completely. The wind story is encouraging too: ideal offshore flow from the N, NNE and NNW is present for 61% of the month, with the strongest and most consistent component coming from the NNW at 15.4%. Air temperatures average a cool 15.5C, with night-time lows near 7.5C and daytime highs up to 23.6C, while precipitation averages around 1mm per day. With water temperature at 17C, a 4/3 wetsuit is the call, and you want to stay flexible during the active cold fronts that sweep through the region.
