Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, and Sidi Kaouki reaps the rewards. This is when the polar-front jet stream dips south, spawning a relentless train of extratropical cyclones that send long-period groundswell marching toward Morocco. Average wave heights run 1.8-2.3m (6-7.5ft) with periods of 11.6-13.2s, and the offshore flow from the NE/ENE/E/ESE quadrant locks in on 38-52% of days. December and January are the standout months, combining powerful NNW/NW swells with clean offshore winds and water temps of 16-17°C (61-63°F). Expect thick, well-ordered lines at this west-facing beach when the Atlantic delivers its winter punch.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early autumn offer a transition zone where the Atlantic storm track begins to shift and the Azores High starts to build (or break down). Average heights ease to 1.7-2.0m (5.5-6.5ft), and periods drop to 9.4-10.8s, meaning the swell is still rideable but lacks the heavy grunt of winter. Ideal offshore wind percentages fall to 24-38% as the trade-wind regime becomes more prominent and the sea breeze mixes things up in the afternoons. April can still see solid NW groundswell wrapping in, while September reawakens with the first long-period pulses of the autumn. If you pick your days, there's fun, rippable surf to be had.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season at Sidi Kaouki, as the Azores High anchors itself over the North Atlantic and suppresses storm generation. The swell becomes a monotonous mix of short-period NNW windswell, averaging 1.6m (5ft) with periods of just 7.6-8.4s. The dominant NNE trade winds are far from ideal, leaving a mere 21-27% of daylight hours with truly clean, offshore conditions. Choppy, weak, and often groveling waves are the norm, and the rare long-period swell is few and far between. Water temps rise to a pleasant 19°C (66°F), but if you're chasing quality, this is the time to look elsewhere.
