Tifnit seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Moroccan coast at Tifnit faces west into the full fetch of the North Atlantic, and when the seasonal conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones cranks up, the spot shifts into its prime. From October through March, average swell heights hover around 5.5-7ft (1.7-2.1m) with periods of 10.9-13.2 seconds, and the bulk of the energy arrives from the NW and NNW. The most powerful, cleanest windows occur when low-pressure systems deepen in the North Atlantic and push long-period WNW/NW swell toward Africa while high pressure over the Sahara drives offshore ENE/E/ESE/SE winds down the coast. December is statistically the pick of the bunch with 49 percent ideal wind; January and February are right behind. This is when Tifnit sees pumping, firing surf on the better sandbanks.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transition months. April still receives solid NW/NNW groundswell, with periods around 10.9 seconds and an average height of 6ft (1.9m), but frequent northwesterly winds cut the number of good days to 15 percent. September marks the first rise in period back into the 10-second range after summer, yet average size remains around 4.5ft (1.4m), and the trade wind is still fighting the autumn setup. During these months, you need to pick the smaller windows of east or southeast wind to find clean, rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Between May and August, Tifnit enters the low-season trade wind rhythm. Swell periods drop to 8.1-9.5 seconds, and the directional distribution becomes overwhelmingly NNW, which is less ideal for the west-facing bight. The wind story is even worse for surf quality: WNW and NW winds dominate, blowing directly onshore and leaving the ocean bumpy, choppy, and sectiony. Ideal wind percentages fall to between 5 and 9 percent. There are still small, rideable waves when the morning onshore flow is light, but this is the least consistent and least inviting period of the year at Tifnit.
