Cobden seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the Tasman Sea storm track aligns with Cobden's northwest-facing exposures during the Southern Hemisphere winter. Between May and August, the average swell pushes to 2.0m (6-7ft) and the period sits in the powerful 12-12.5s range, with W-WNW swells accounting for a significant portion of the mix. At the same time, the regional pressure gradient sets up a consistent southeast/east flow - offshore for Cobden - with ideal wind percentages peaking at 71% in both June and July. This is the sweet spot: long-period W/WNW groundswell, cold but clean E/ESE winds, and minimal onshore W-NW contamination. Pack a hood, not a small board.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder seasons offer a trade-off. March and April maintain average swells around 1.7-1.8m (5-6ft) with periods stretching to 12s, and April's 53% ideal wind makes it a genuine gem. September is the biggest month on average at 2.1m (7ft), and October still holds plenty of W-NW energy, but the synoptic pattern becomes more volatile as the westerlies grow stronger and E/ESE offshore flow weakens. Expect clean sessions mixed with periods of onshore W/NW wind and lumpy, short-period storm surf.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer and early autumn bring the quietest, least consistent conditions to Cobden. Average swell heights dip to 1.6-1.8m (5-6ft), periods drop below 11.5s, and the dominant wind regime flips to onshore from the W-NNW quadrant, with ideal offshore winds limited to 30-37% of the time. Waves become more wind-affected, less organized, and often drift into the grovelly 0.5-1m range between frontal passages. When a long-period W swell lines up with a rare ESE offshore, the spot still fires - but patience is required.
