Little Wanganui seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (April - August)
As the Tasman Sea wakes up in autumn, Little Wanganui morphs into a consistent, powerful set-up. From April through August, average swell heights climb to 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) with long periods of 12.2-12.5s, while ideal offshore wind windows peak between 45 and 58 percent. South-eastern winds, generated by slow-moving highs east of New Zealand, blow straight offshore across this north-west-facing beach, grooming the persistent W-WSW swell into clean, powerful lines. This is the heart of the season.
Fair Surf Season (February - March & September - October)
During these transition months, the ocean still delivers quality, but consistency drops. Late summer and early autumn (February - March) offer some of the best waves of the year when high pressure edges close enough to produce light offshore mornings; average swells sit around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods lengthen to 11.9-12.3s. Spring (September - October) brings strong, stirring swells of 7ft (2.1m) or more, but the wind - averaging only 27-35% ideal - becomes the limiting factor as westerly storminess increases.
Low Surf Season (November - January)
The summer doldrums are real at Little Wanganui. Between November and January, average wave heights ease to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), periods shorten to 11.3-11.6s, and ideal offshore wind frequency drops to just 25-27%. Onshore westerlies and NW sea breezes dominate, often turning an otherwise rideable swell into bumpy, wind-affected surf. The few good days tend to come from Tasman lows or strong Southern Ocean pulses, but they are fleeting. If you are planning around the calendar, this is the time to watch the charts closely.
