Mount Maunganui seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (March - May)
The annual journey around the sun is written clearly in the Bay of Plenty swell and wind roses. As summer fades, the subtropical high drifts north and the Southern Ocean storm track slowly reawakens, injecting more southwest and west offshore wind into the system while the sea is still reasonably warm. That makes March through May the sweet spot: average swell heights hold at around 1.2m (4ft), periods remain in the 8.2-8.9s range, and 41 to 48 percent of the time the wind is blowing from the offshore quadrant. The swell directions are still locked primarily into the NNE-NE-ENE-E window that works best on the northeast-facing sandbars at the Mount.
Fair Surf Season (December - February and June - August)
Summer and midwinter are the two sides of the fair season coin. December through February produces the most directional NE/ENE swell of the year and the longest average periods of 8.6-8.9s, but the subtropical high and the afternoon sea breeze cut ideal wind frequencies down to 36-39 percent, so the real windows are mostly early morning and late evening. June through August, by contrast, is the most wind-consistent time of year, with 48-49 percent offshore flow and slightly bigger average surf of 1.3m (4-5ft). The trade-off is that the swell direction spreads more toward NNW/NW/W and the average period drops to 8.0-8.1s. In both blocks there is plenty of rideable surf; you just have to chase the tide, the wind, and the sandbar.
Low Surf Season (September - November)
Spring is the most fickle season at the Mount. September through November marks the transition from winter westerlies to summer subtropical conditions, and the average wave periods slump to 7.4-7.8s. The optimal NNE-NE-ENE-E swell share falls below 48 percent, bottoming out at just 40.7 percent in October, while strong WSW and W fronts often arrive too raw to produce clean, organized surf. There are still fun sessions, especially after a high-pressure ridge settles over the North Island, but on balance these months offer lower consistency and more short-period, wind-affected waves. It is the season for patient surfers.
