Best Surf Season (November - April)

Shipwreck Bay may face north, but its most dependable surf windows are shaped by offshore southerly winds rather than the biggest swell. From November to April the percentage of ideal S-SSW-SW wind climbs to 25-34 percent and peaks in February, while the average swell sits at a manageable 5-6ft (1.6-2.0m) with 12-13s periods. The wave-rose data is overwhelmingly SW/WSW dominated, which is not the magical direction for this north-facing spot; it is the occasional N, NNE, NE or NNW pulse, particularly when backed by a strong southerly offshore flow, that turns the bay on. Warm water (17.5-21.3°C) and lower rainfall add to the appeal. In short, this is the season of clean, organized lineups rather than raw size.

Fair Surf Season (May and October)

May and October bridge the gap. Ideal offshore wind frequency drops to only 20-21 percent, while average swell height builds to 7ft (2.1-2.2m) on 12.8s period. The Tasman Sea's storm belt is becoming more active, delivering strong SW/WSW groundswell-powerful but often misaligned with the north-facing coast. Skilled locals can find corners and takeoff zones where the south-west energy refracts, but consistency drops and rain becomes more frequent. These months reward patience: choose days when the wind swings offshore and the swell direction nudges into the northern quadrant.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Winter is the low season for quality at Shipwreck Bay. The average height maxes out at 7-8ft (2.2-2.3m) with periods around 12-13s, so there is no shortage of ocean energy. But ideal offshore wind falls to a scarce 18-19 percent, and the prevailing south-west/west-south-west swell periodically trades long-period power for onshore chop. Northerly through north-northwest winds, generally less than ideal for this coast, are a common performance killer, and the wet season peaks with 3.1-4.3mm/day of rain. When a deep low passes and a southerly change rips through, the winter lines can still stand tall and hollow-but the risk/reward ratio is much lower than the clean summer months.
