Best Surf Season (April - May & September - November)

These two transition windows are the real sweet spot at Stoney Beach. The summer onshore trade-wind regime is breaking down, the Southern Ocean low-pressure train is firing, and average wave periods climb into the 9-10 second range. You get a much better chance of clean N/NE/ENE swell hitting the beach under a S/SW or WSW offshore flow. April and May are the most consistent, with ideal-wind frequencies of 29-32% and periods of 10.2-10.6s. September through November sees the preferred NE/ENE swell window climb back up to around 29-33% of the spectrum while spring cold fronts supply offshore wind.

Fair Surf Season (June - August)

Mid-winter brings the coldest water, the most frequent offshore winds, and some of the biggest, longest-period groundswell of the year. The Roaring Forties send a barrage of S/SSW and S/SE energy toward the region, and ideal wind frequency peaks at 31-36%. However, Stoney's NE-facing orientation means not all that south energy lines up; only about 22-25% of the swell spectrum arrives from the preferred N through ENE quadrant. Expect powerful, glassy days mixed with more refracted, cross-angled lines, and water temps down around 9.1-10.6°C.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

High summer and early autumn are the most frustrating months at Stoney Beach. The subtropical high parks northeast of New Zealand, pumping persistent NE winds and short-period ENE windswell. Directionally, the swell is plentiful-ENE/NNE/NE often totals 30-40% of the spectrum-but the accompanying onshore flow chops it up. Average periods sink to 8.5-9.8s, and ideal wind days drop to 23-24%. Early mornings can still produce rippable 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf before the seabreeze kicks in, but the quality window is small.
