January: Summer Lull with a Tropical Twist

January is classic high-summer surf at Wainui Beach. The average swell height sits at a modest 5ft (1.5m) and the average period of 9.8 seconds means much of the energy is still short-period windswell rather than long-period groundswell. The target directions are actually well represented - E, ESE, SE and SSE swell combine for just over half of the wave distribution - but the heights are heavily concentrated in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) and 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) range. That makes for fun, rippable walls rather than heavy, pumping surf. Wind is the bigger issue: ideal offshore flow sits at only 39 percent, with the classic early morning NW to NNW breeze often giving way to a NE/E sea breeze through the afternoon. Water temperature is a warm 19.4°C and air temperatures average 19.3°C, so conditions are pleasant. If a tropical low drifts down from the Coral Sea, expect a fun E/ESE pulse, but January is mostly about small-wave groveling and picking off clean morning waves.
