Best Surf Season (April - July)

The New Zealand winter heart beats with consistency at Westport Breakwater. From April through July, the average offshore wind window hits its climatological peak, with ideal surfing conditions 50-52 percent of the time. Long-period Southern Ocean and Tasman Sea groundswell keeps average wave heights in the 7-8ft (2.1-2.5m) range and periods sit at 12.3-12.6s, meaning powerful, organized lines. The swell direction is dominated by WSW/W, but it is the periodic NNW/NW pulses mixed in with the west energy that truly light up the north-facing breakwater. Cooler air, dropping water temps into the low teens, and a consistent south-to-southwest offshore push keep the surface clean when it counts.
