Best Surf Season (December - April)

Whangapoua Beach's best chance for workable surf comes from December through April. During these months, the favorable N-NNE-NE-ENE window makes up 51-59% of the total swell direction spectrum. ENE and NE energy dominate, and the average wave period reaches 7.2-8.1s, placing the beach in that punchy, rideable 6-9s band. Water temperature climbs from around 18°C to a summer peak near 21°C, and the high-pressure belt keeps rainfall relatively moderate. Average wave height is still only about 1.5ft (0.5m), and truly glassy moments are rare, but when a light SW or WSW offshore breeze meets the NE-ENE swell, Whangapoua can produce clean, rippable banks.
