Popoyo seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - October)
Popoyo sits exposed to the southwest, so the magic happens when eastern Pacific storms and southern-hemisphere low pressure systems send S/SSW/SW/WSW groundswell into the coast. From May through October, the swell window is alive with long-period energy in the 12-14s range, and the dominant directions align beautifully with this SSW-facing beach. The northeast trade winds remain important, but they are lighter and more variable during this stretch, especially in September and October when ideal offshore conditions reach nearly 40 percent. This is the prime window for consistent, rippable surf at Popoyo, with warm water, tropical showers, and regular pulses of head-high to overhead swell.
Fair Surf Season (April & November)
April and November are shoulder months that offer a real mix. April marks the first major shift toward S/SSW/SW swell, and November still holds onto some late-season SSW/SW energy, but the wind is less reliable. April gets a strong E/ENE flow, while November feels the return of the dry-season trade winds. You can find fun, long-period surf in both months, but the consistency and number of clean, all-day sessions are lower than the heart of the season.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The dry season is the tricky stretch at Popoyo. The northeast trades blow hard and almost constantly, which gives plenty of offshore wind direction, but the swell window is dominated by short-period ENE/NE windswell in the 8-11s range. The percentage of true S/SSW/SW groundswell is small, so the surf is often average, punchy, and a little lumpy. March is the pick of the low season because the first southern pulses and longer periods start to appear, but for consistent quality, most surfers will want to wait for the April-October window.
