Punta Miramar seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - October)

Punta Miramar is a west-southwest-facing beach, so the surf clock really starts ticking when the swell switches into the SSW/SW quadrant and the trade wind blows from the northeast. From April through October, the average swell height holds at 1.2-1.3m (4ft) and the average period climbs into the 13-14 second range. The wave rose becomes overwhelmingly dominated by SSW/SW energy, with the ideal direction share reaching 65-94% of the total. This is the Southern Hemisphere swell season: powerful low-pressure systems in the South Pacific send long-period SSW groundswell thousands of miles into the Central American Pacific, while occasional Eastern Pacific tropical cyclones add extra punch in September and October. Offshore NE/ENE trade winds remain the climatic norm, and ideal wind frequency peaks at 67-74% during June-August. Expect warm water around 28-29°C, building rainfall from May onward, and the most consistent, rippable surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March & November)

March and November are classic shoulder months at Punta Miramar. In March, SSW/SW energy begins to take over, with the optimal direction share jumping above 45% and the average period lengthening to 13.5s, but S/SSE leftovers still clutter the mix. November sees the cleanest trade-wind flow of the year, with ideal winds at 74% and SSW still delivering over 71% of the wave energy, but average size backs down to 1.1m (3.5ft). Both months are excellent windows for scoring good waves if you are flexible on timing and willing to pick the better days.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

December through February is the low season. Average heights drop to 1.0-1.1m (3-3.5ft) and the swell rose rotates away from pure SSW toward S, SSE, and SE - not ideal for a WSW-facing spot. Periods are still long at 12-13s, so the waves that do arrive are lined up and clean under the strong ENE trade winds, but they are small and less consistent. This is the time to bring the grovel board, pick your windows around proper SSW pulses, and enjoy warm, dry, offshore mornings.
